P. Daniel Yates, Jr. passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Friday, May 12th. He was born on December 8, 1918 to Presley Daniel Yates and Julia Richardson Yates. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret, and his siblings Charles, Fran and Alan.

Dan attended Boys High and graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1941. He served in the Army during World War II. After the war, Dan went into the insurance business and formed Yates Insurance Agency with his brother, Alan. He was very proud of his relationships with clients, some for over 70 years. He loved the staff and bragged about never retiring. In 2010, Dan received the Associated General Contractors of Georgia’s Skill, Integrity and Responsibility Award, its highest honor. He also earned the Georgia Highway Contractors Association’s Extraordinary Contribution Award.

In 1947, he married the love of his life, Margaret Nell Shepherd. They were devoted to each other and married for nearly 60 years. Sea Island was their favorite place and they loved being at their home there with family and friends. Highlands, NC was also a special place where they spent many wonderful weekends.

Late in life, Dan moved to Lenbrook Square where he met Mynelle Harris. They enjoyed a special friendship for many years.

His love for golf began at an early age at East Lake Golf Club, tagging along with his brother Charles and Bobby Jones. He captained the golf team at Georgia Tech for 3 years and was later inducted into its Hall of Fame. He won the Atlanta City Amateur, the Dogwood Invitational, and, in 1939, the Georgia State Amateur when it was held at the Sea Island Golf Club. Dan was a member of the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame.

In 1934, Dan traveled to Augusta to watch his brother, Charles, compete in the inaugural Masters Tournament and attended the following 77 tournaments. He enjoyed many years serving on the Media Committee at the Masters Tournament. It gave him great pleasure to host friends at Augusta National Golf Club. He was also a member of the Atlanta Country Club, Capital City Club, Peachtree Golf Club, Highlands Country Club, Ocean Forest Golf Club and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. For many years, he attended the Open Championship in Great Britain.

He is survived by daughter Mynel Dubose, her husband David and her sons Josh and Adam Harris. He is also survived by son Danny, his wife Lois and their children Maggie Fischer (Brooks) and Daniel Yates (Julie) and four great grandchildren – Charlie and Henry Fischer and Danny and Louise Yates. He is also survived by in laws Alana and Harold Shepherd, his closest friends.

The family would like to thank Marsha Shannon, Deana Johnson, Endrian Stanley and Chelese Davis for their wonderful and loving care.

The family will host a reception on Tuesday, May 16th, from 5pm to 7pm at Peachtree Golf Club, 4600 Peachtree Road Atlanta, GA 30319. A memorial service will be Wednesday, May 17th, at 2pm at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, 3180 Peachtree Road Atlanta, GA 30305.
